Checks and Balances

The US Congress- has 2 sections the House of Representatives and the Senate, both of which need to agree to create laws

The president -passes laws and vetoes

US Supreme Court- ensure that all laws and government follow in order in accordance with the US Constitution.

Manifest Destiny

1800s belief that Americans had the right to spread across the continent.

Annexation of Texas

Texas declared its self independent, yet being vulnerable having depeparted from Mexico it looked toward the US for protection resulting in border disputes and a war against Mexico

Wilmot provision

States that any state acquired by the US from Mexican territories will not be allowed to have slavery

European Immigration

2 million into America led to nativism, a movement meant to favor Americans born in the states

Impacts of European immigration (north)

mostly in the north, because of its higher number of opportunities, which increases the population and results in a wartime advantage

westward expansion

Soil from cotton farming was worn out, so they needed fertile land. They looked westward for it created problems on what decides if a state was free or slave

The main reason for the US population growth & wealth

The growth of cotton made up of more then half of all exports and also required more land

The Missouri Compromise 1820 (both side thoughts)

A debate on the expansion of slavery westward and whether or not to allow slavery.

Anti slavery leaders resisted its expansion, for moral reasons and fear that slave states already controlled Congress

Proslavery governors argued that Congress had no right to dictate if a state was free or Slave, because it interferes with states right

What was the Missouri Compromise?

Missouri became a slave state while Maine was free to keep balance in Senate. and to maintain this balance, a 36 30 line was created where no state above it could be slave and slavery had to stay below it

The compromise of 1850

(1) California was admitted as a free state,

(2) territorial status and popular sovereignty of Utah and New Mexico,

(3) resolution of Texas-New Mexico boundaries

, (4) federal assumption of Texas debt,

(5) the slave trade was abolished in DC, and

(6)new fugitive slave law, advocated by Henry Clay and Stephen A. Douglas

What caused the 1850 compromise

Cali wanted to be free, slave states hated this so they made a compromise where Cali can be free and slave states got stricter slave laws
