A debate on the expansion of slavery westward and whether or not to allow slavery.

Anti slavery leaders resisted its expansion, for moral reasons and fear that slave states already controlled Congress

Proslavery governors argued that Congress had no right to dictate if a state was free or Slave, because it interferes with states right

What was the Missouri Compromise?

Missouri became a slave state while Maine was free to keep balance in Senate. and to maintain this balance, a 36 30 line was created where no state above it could be slave and slavery had to stay below it
