7 types of echo airspace (SETVODA)
S - Surface: Class E airspace that extends down to the surface, typically around airports without operating control towers, depicted by dashed magenta lines on sectional charts.
E - Extension: Class E surface area extensions, often protecting Instrument Approach Procedures (IAPs), also depicted by dashed magenta lines.
T - Transition: Class E airspace that begins at 700 feet AGL (Above Ground Level), used for transitioning to or from the airport or enroute environment, and shown with a faded magenta line on sectional charts.
V - Victor Airway: Federal airways, which are Class E airspace starting at 1200 feet AGL and extending up to 18,000 feet MSL (Mean Sea Level), depicted by blue lines.
O - Offshore: Controlled airspace beyond 12 nautical miles from the coast of the United States, usually shown by a blue zipper line on sectional charts with varying altitudes listed alongside.
D - Domestic Enroute: The general "everywhere else" Class E airspace, typically starting at 1200 feet AGL, though sometimes higher (e.g., 14,500 feet MSL in some areas). This airspace is depicted by a blue shaded border, and may not be explicitly marked on sectional charts in many areas.
A - Above FL600: Class E airspace existing above Flight Level (FL) 600, which is 60,000 feet MSL.
When do you need a type rating
Greater than 12500 pounds max take off or anything jet powered (ex. Vision jet)
Do type ratings supercede the need for endorsements
Yes—ex. Need for vision jet type rating is good, no need for high performance
what’s the function of the magnetometers?
it’s 3 magnets on an orthogonal plane (90 degree angles) that correct for magnetic deviation
if you modify the aircraft in any way (ex. change a six pack out for a G1000), is it still airworthy?
No—it must match the TCDS
Who makes the TCDS?
The FAA
if you lose a finger, is your medical still valid?
no!! your medical is only valid as you are when you got it
Explain SODA
Statement of demonstrated ability—from AME, takes awhile to receive, needed for any illness/loss of finger/etc
youre at a christmas party with friends and they want you to fly but they each had a drink. Can they fly with you as passengers?
Maybe—passengers can’t be drunk, and there’s histotoxic hypoxia too, and you need to consider if they would be able to respond to your instructions in an emergency too
regarding histotoxic hypoxia, 1oz alcohol is equal to how many feet of physiological altitude?
2000ft psyiological altitude
