Purpose of Forest Inventory
Determine as acurately as possible the volume, weight, and value of standing trees in a given area
Land Acquisition
needs net volume and value of merchantable trees growing in operable areas
Management plan cruises
Provide information on timber growth, yield, and allowable cut. intended for broad based management or long rang planning
Special Surveys
need visual or areial photos. 100% value of poles or veneer logs
simple random sampling
Divide the forest population into sampling units and randomly selecting units that will be included in the sample
Systematic sampling
choose sampling units that are equally spaced spacially or temporally. Ex. Line plot inventory
Stratified random sampling
forest population is divided into levels or strata and units are sampled randomly and independently from those groups.
Tree Tallies
simple counts of trees in different categories. EX. DBH, species, Total height, All trees etc.
Stand and stock table
used to summarize data by tree sizes and species groups
Stand table
tabulation of the total number of stems in a stand by DBH classes and species
Stock table
List the volumes of stems in a stand by DBH class and species
Limitation of fixed radius plots
Larger trees are not prioritized
time consuming
careful plot size selection
