Skin Infections
May be caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, other types of microbes, and parasites, often from opportunistic microbes.
Cellulitis
Infection of the dermis and subcutaneous tissue, usually caused by Staphylococcus aureus.
Signs and Symptoms of Cellulitis
Reddened area, swollen, painful, with red streaks along lymph vessels.
Furuncles
Also known as boils; usually caused by Staphylococcus aureus and begins at hair follicles.
Impetigo
A highly contagious infection in infants caused by Staphylococcus aureus, characterized by small red vesicles.
Acute Necrotizing Fasciitis
A severe infection causing tissue necrosis, commonly caused by virulent strains of Group A beta-hemolytic streptococcus.
Leprosy (Hansen Disease)
A chronic disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae, which affects skin, mucous membranes, and peripheral nerves.
Herpes Simplex
A virus that causes cold sores; remains latent in sensory nerve ganglia.
Verrucae (Warts)
caused by Human Papillomavirus (HPV), commonly found in children and young adults.
Tinea
Fungal infections, often including tinea capitis (scalp), tinea corporis (body), and tinea pedis (athlete's foot).
Scabies
Infestation by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei, characterized by intense itching and burrowing in the skin.
Keratoses
Benign lesions associated with aging or skin damage, such as seborrheic and actinic keratoses.
Squamous Cell Carcinoma
A malignant tumor of the epidermis, found on sun-exposed areas, with a good prognosis if treated early.
Malignant Melanoma
A highly metastatic form of skin cancer that develops in melanocytes, often from a nevus (mole).
Kaposi Sarcoma
A type of cancer that occurs in people with immunodeficiencies like AIDS, characterized by purplish macules.
