Cell Cycle
A series of stages that occur for the cell to divide properly
Broken down into 5 major phases: interphase, prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase
Daughter Cell
Name for the two cells produced from mitosis
DNA in each is an exact copy, making them genetically identical
Interphase
First stage of the cell cycle
Subdivided into three separate stages
75% of the cell cycle is spent in interphase
G1 Stage
Cell performs normal functions
Cell grows larger
Additional organelles are created
S Stage
DNA is synthesized/an extra copy is made
G2 Stage
Cell performs normal functions
Cell continues to grow
Prophase
Start of mitosis
The nucleus starts to dissolve and break apart
Chromatin condenses to form chromosomes (easily movable packages)
Spindle fibers form
Metaphase
Chromosomes are pulled by spindle fibers towards the cell’s equator
Spindle fibers attach to the centromeres
Anaphase
Each chromatid is pulled to the opposite end of the cell by the spindle fibers
Telophase
Spindle fibers begin to dissolve and disappear
The nucleus reforms around both sets of chromatids
Cytoplasm begins to divide (cytokinesis)
Chromatids unwind back into chromatin
