2
New cards

**How does the file path work?

C:\Documents\HIS182\Term Paper\Illustrations\SBAnthony.jpg

Using this example, “C:” is the drive on which the file is stored (in this case, the hard drive),

“Documents” is the file’s primary folder.

“HIS182”, “Term Paper”, and “Illustrations” are successive subfolders within the Documents main folder

The file’s name, “SBAnthony” is separated from the file extension (in this case, “jpg”) by a period

6
New cards

**What characters can’t be used in a file name?

Some special characters, such as a quotation mark, will not allow the file to be saved until the file name is modified to exclude them

7
New cards

**Where do deleted files go?

The Recycle Bin

8
New cards

**What is the Recycle Bin?

A folder on the desktop, represented by an icon that looks like a recycling bin, where files deleted from the hard drive reside until you permanently purge them from your system

9
New cards

**What happens to files deleted from other storage locations or files stored in the cloud?

They do NOT go to the Recycle Bin on the computer you are working on, but are rather deleted from the system immediately

10
New cards

**What kind of file deletion do Mac systems have?

A folder on the desktop called Trash, which is represented by a wastebasket icon

11
New cards

**How do you delete files on a Mac?

Drag the files to the Trash icon

12
New cards

**How long do files stay in the Recycle Bin or Trash?

Files placed in the Recycle Bin or the Trash remain in the system until they’re permanently deleted?

13
New cards

**How do I permanently delete files from the Recycle Bin or Trash?

On Windows, select “Empty Recycle Bin” after right-clicking the desktop icon

On Macs, select “Empty Trash” from the Finder menu

14
New cards

**Why would I use a compressed file?

File compression (or “zipping a file”) makes a large file more compact, making it easier and faster to send large attachments by e-mail, to upload them to the web, or to save them onto a flash drive or other storage medium

15
New cards

**How can you compress a file?

Windows has a built-in file compression utility that you can access through File Explorer

16
New cards

**How do you create your own zipped file?

By selecting a group of files and then compressing them from inside File Explorer

17
New cards

**What are some stand-alone freeware and shareware programs for compression?

WinZip for Windows

Stuff It for Windows or Mac

18
New cards

**What is an example of compressed files?

Compressed zip files can be expanded using tools built into File Explorer

To uncompress (extract) a zipped file, select the file, select Extract All, choose a destination for the extracted files, and then select Extract

**What is the internet?

A network of networks that connects billions of computer users globally

21
New cards

**Why was the internet created?

To establish a secure form of communication

Creating a means by which all computers could communicate

22
New cards

**What happens when you request access to a website?

When you type a website’s home page address into your web browser (such as www.amazon.com), the data request from your computer (the client computer) is sent by the Internet communication pathways to a server computer (Amazon’s)

23
New cards

**How does a website process the request to view it?

The server computer (such as Amazon’s server) processes the request and returns the requested data to your client computer, also by Internet communication pathways

24
New cards

**How does your computer receive the requested data to view a website?

The web browser on your client computer interprets the returned data from the server and displays it on its monitor

25
New cards

**Do the data request and data reply utilize the same Internet pathways?

The data reply most likely takes a different route than did the data request

26
New cards

***Why are IP addresses important?

They are the means by which computers connected to the Internet identify each other

31
New cards

***Do websites have IP addresses?

Yes, each website is assigned a unique IP address
