Place Value
A mathematical system where each digit's position in a number represents a specific value, such as ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, and 10,000.
Expanded Notation
Also known as expanded form, it is writing out a number to explain its value by place values so that adding all the components together results in the original number.
Decimal
A number written with a dot (decimal point) representing values smaller than a whole number, placed after the ones place value.
Tenths
The place value located directly to the right of the decimal point.
Hundredths
The place value located directly to the right of the tenths place value.
Line Segment
A straight geometric line shown with two arrows at the ends.
Straight Angle
An angle that visually looks basically like a line segment.
Obtuse Angle
A type of angle described as a big fat angle.
Acute Angle
A type of angle described as a really small, tinky tiny angle.
Parallel Lines
Two lines that remain straight together, go on forever, and never touch or crash into each other.
Symmetry
A characteristic of a shape where folding or cutting it in half makes one side exactly identical to the other side.
Mixed Number
A number representation containing a whole number combined with a regular fraction.
Improper Fraction
A fraction where the top number (numerator) is larger than the bottom number (denominator).
Equivalent Fractions
Fractions that have different numbers but represent equal values.
Butterfly Method
A multiplication technique used to cross-multiply fraction numerators and denominators to compare fraction sizes or check for equivalency.
Financial Literacy
A unit of math focusing on money concepts, including banking, loans, interest, and managing expenses.
Lender
An entity, such as a bank, that lends money to an individual or borrower.
Borrower
A person who receives and borrows money from a lender or bank.
Interest
An extra fee charged by a lender that a borrower must pay back in addition to the original amount borrowed.
Fixed Expense
An expense where the cost remains the exact same every single month and does not change, such as rent or a flat-rate cell phone bill.
Variable Expense
An expense where the cost changes over time based on usage or choices, such as an electricity bill or dining out at a restaurant.
