One way reconstruction failed was due to political instability. After the civil war, the shifting priorities in the North allowed Southern Democrats to return to legislation. Without the attention of the North, Southern Democrats were able implement laws that slowed or halted the process of integration. Another way reconstruction failed was the contradictory decisions of the courts. On the federal level, the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments were written in hopes of ushering in a society without slavery and human ownership. At the same time, the federal court played inability to enforce at the state level and often ruled away from Black progress. For example, rulings that let “race neutral” language deny and restrict Black agency and access.
How did reconstruction fail according to Dr. Gates
The Haitian revolution challenged global systems of slavery by being a strong indicator that the institution of slavery was not going to last. From the video, America, Europe, and Spain were against the idea of a Black republic. In the Americas, it forced slave owners and governments to confront the anger enslaved people were feeling and how it can manifest into widespread resistance. It built from the ideas of the French revolution and had some in France acknowledge the abuse of rights and freedoms for the Haitians. The Haitian revolution inspired other groups to seek social change as well. As seen in the video, with the encouragement of Sonthonax, mixed race Haitians lobbied to France for rights and status as citizens.
