What is the emancipation proclamation?

The executive order issued by US President Abraham Lincoln on Jan 1st 1863 that legally declared freedom of enslaved people in active rebellion against the US

  • The 14th + 15th ammendments were also part of this (giving legal rights, protection + black men right to vote)

What is segregation? What did the South use it for?

The enforced seperation of people based on race, especially between Black and white Americans

  • Used to maintain white dominance within the south and to deny African Americans equal access to public services, education and opportunities

What are 3 of the ways African Americans were segregated from White Americans?

  • Seperate schools: Black children forced to attend underfunded schools with poor facilities and fewer resources

  • Public transport: African Americans forced to sit in designated sections (often at the back) of buses and trains

  • Housing: Enforced by laws, politics and social practices

  • Banks and government agencies denied Black Americans loans and insurance; property deeds banned sales to them

  • Black families pushed into overcrowded, poorly serviced, often industrial areas
