manic episode
distinct period of abnormally and persistently elevated, expansive, or irritable mood and abnormally and persistently increased goal-directed activity or energy; must last at least 1 week unless results in hospitalization or involves psychotic features, must cause marked impairment,
hypomanic episode
distinct period of abnormally and persistently elevated, expansive, or irritable mood and abnormally and persistently increased activity or energy; must last at least 4 days, not severe enough to cause marked impairment
depressive episode
lasts for at least 2 weeks, includes at least 5 symptoms, must cause clincally significant distress or impairment in functioning
Bipolar I
at least one manic episode; may include one or more episodes of hypomania or major depression
Bipolar II
requires one hypomanic episode and one major depressive episode
Cyclothymic disorder
marked by numerous periods with hypomanic symptoms that do not meet criteria for major depressive episode; two years in adults, 1 year in children/adolescents; must cause clinically significant distress or impaired functioning;
