Decomposition
The process of breaking down organic material, including human bodies, which starts immediately after death.
Perimortem
Referring to the time period around the time of death, significant for distinguishing injuries related to cause of death.
Antimortem
Referring to events or conditions occurring before death.
Algor mortis
The cooling of the body after death, which is influenced by environmental conditions.
Lividity (Liver mortis)
The pooling of blood in the lower parts of the body after death due to gravity, resulting in discoloration.
Rigor mortis
The stiffening of muscles after death due to the depletion of ATP, typically occurring 2-4 hours postmortem.
Putrefaction
The decomposition of organic matter, particularly due to the action of bacteria, leading to the breakdown of tissues and the production of gases.
Maggots
Larvae of flies that play a significant role in decomposition by feeding on decaying tissue.
Black putrefaction
A stage of decomposition marked by a strong odor and significant tissue breakdown, often involving color changes in the skin.
Desiccation
The process of drying out, which can affect decomposition, especially in low humidity conditions leading to mummification.
Adipocere
A waxy substance formed during decomposition, particularly in moist environments, due to chemical reactions between bacterial enzymes and body fat.
Skin slippage
A process during decomposition where the outer layer of skin loosens and may fall off due to the breakdown of supporting tissues.
Skeletonization
The final stage of decomposition where soft tissues are mostly or entirely gone, leaving only the skeletal remains.
Diagenesis
The natural process that alters the organic and inorganic composition of bones over time.
Bloat
The inflation of a decomposing body due to gas buildup from bacterial activity, which can lead to pressure and purging of body fluids.
Active decay stage
A stage in decomposition characterized by significant mass loss primarily due to maggot feeding and the release of odor.
