Where did many of the roots of modern astronomy come from?
Ancient Greece, along with contributions from other ancient civilizations.
What is retrograde motion?
The apparent backward movement of a planet caused by the relative motion and perspective of Earth and the planet.
Why does retrograde motion happen?
Earth and other planets orbit the Sun at different speeds. When Earth passes an outer planet, that planet can appear to move backward against the stars.
Who was Ptolemy?
An ancient astronomer and mathematician who developed a detailed geocentric model of the universe.
What is a geocentric model?
A model where Earth is at the center and the Sun, Moon, planets, and stars orbit Earth.
What was the Ptolemaic system?
Ptolemy's geocentric model, which used epicycles to explain planetary motion.
What are epicycles, and why did Ptolemy use them?
Small circular paths added to planetary orbits to help explain things like retrograde motion.
Why was Ptolemy's model so complicated?
It required many circles and epicycles to make a geocentric model match observations.
How long was Ptolemy's model influential?
For over 1,000 years, and it became widely accepted in medieval Europe.
Who was Nicolaus Copernicus?
A Polish astronomer and Catholic canon who helped launch the modern shift toward heliocentrism.
What is heliocentrism?
The idea that the Sun is at the center of the solar system and the planets orbit it.
How did Copernicus's model differ from Ptolemy's?
Ptolemy: Earth-centered + epicycles. Copernicus: Sun-centered, with planets orbiting the Sun.
Was Copernicus the first person ever to propose heliocentrism?
No. Ancient Greek thinkers such as Aristarchus had proposed it earlier, but Copernicus revived and developed the idea in early modern Europe.
Who was Tycho Brahe?
A Danish astronomer famous for making extremely precise observations of planetary positions before telescopes were commonly used.
What was Tycho Brahe's most important contribution?
His accurate astronomical data, especially his observations of Mars, which Kepler later used.
How long did Tycho collect astronomical data?
About 20 years.
What are some interesting facts about Tycho Brahe?
He was extremely wealthy, lost part of his nose in a duel, reportedly owned a pet moose, and was known for extravagant parties.
Who was Johannes Kepler?
A mathematician and astronomer who used Tycho Brahe's data to develop his three laws of planetary motion.
What was Kepler trying to figure out with Tycho's data?
The true orbit of Mars.
What was the "War on Mars"?
Kepler's years-long struggle to mathematically determine Mars's orbit, eventually discovering that it was elliptical.
What is Kepler's First Law?
Planets orbit the Sun in ellipses, not perfect circles.
What is Kepler's Second Law?
Planets move faster when closer to the Sun and slower when farther away.
What is Kepler's Third Law?
There is a mathematical relationship between a planet's distance from the Sun and its orbital period.
According to Kepler's Third Law, which planets take longer to orbit the Sun?
Planets farther from the Sun take longer to complete an orbit.
Easy way to remember Kepler's laws?
1 = Shape -> elliptical, 2 = Speed -> faster/slower, 3 = Time -> distance affects orbital period
Who was Galileo Galilei?
An Italian scientist who used the telescope to make important astronomical observations.
Did Galileo invent the telescope?
No. He improved and used one to systematically study the sky.
What were the Galilean moons?
The four large moons of Jupiter: Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto.
Why were Jupiter's moons important?
They showed that not everything orbited Earth, challenging geocentrism.
What did Galileo discover about Venus?
That Venus has phases, similar to the Moon.
Why were Venus's phases important?
They provided evidence against the traditional Ptolemaic model and supported a Sun-centered system.
What did Galileo observe on the Moon?
Craters and mountains, showing that the Moon had an uneven surface.
What did Galileo observe on the Sun?
Sunspots, showing that the Sun was not a perfectly unchanging object.

Why is Newton so important?
He developed major laws explaining motion and gravity, helping create a unified explanation of physical phenomena.
What did Newton contribute to mathematics?
He was one of the key developers of calculus, independently of Leibniz.
What type of telescope did Newton develop?
The reflecting telescope, which uses mirrors instead of lenses.
How did Einstein relate to Newton's work?
Einstein later revised and expanded Newton's understanding of gravity, especially through general relativity.
What is Newton's First Law?
An object at rest stays at rest, and an object in motion stays in motion unless acted on by a net external force. Also called the Law of Inertia.
What is inertia?
An object's tendency to resist changes in its motion.
What is Newton's Second Law?
F = ma — net force equals mass × acceleration.
What is Newton's Third Law?
For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.
What is Newton's law of universal gravitation?
Every object with mass attracts every other object with mass.
How do mass and distance affect gravity?
More mass = stronger gravity. More distance = weaker gravity.
