what is Shahadah?

The declaration of faith.

what is the Shahadah in Sunni Islam?

‘I declare that there is no God but Allah

And Muhammad is His messenger.’

What is the Shahadah in Shi’a Islam?

‘I declare that there is no God but Allah

And Muhammad is His messenger.

I bear witness that Ali is the beloved of Allah and the rightful trustee

Of the prophet, and his immediate successor.’

When is the Shahadah said?

• said as the only requirement to convert is to recite in front of Muslims

• it is the first thing a baby hears and the last thing someone hears before they die

• it is a part of every daily prayer

Pilgrimage - to perform a pilgrimage to Makkah at least once in a lifetime

What are the 10 obligatory acts?

Salah, Sawm, Zakah, Khums, Hajj, Jihad, Do good (Amr-bil-Maruf), Avoid evil (Nahi Anil Munkar), Love friends of God (Tawallah), Avoid enemies of God (Tabarra).

What is Khums?

a 20% tax on income once all expenses are deducted. Half goes to charity and half goes to Shi’a religious leaders.

Jihad means struggle - the inner struggle to live out Muslim faith in the best way possible, and the outer struggle to defend the Muslim faith

encouraging people to do good

discouraging people from what is wrong

to be loving towards the friends of God, including Muhammad and the Imams
