Epiglottitis
Inflammation of epiglottis that is a medical emergency with quick onset, occurring around ages 2-7 yrs.
Epiglottitis Primary Etiology
Haemophilus Influenzae B (HiB).
Epiglottitis Secondary Etiologies
Grp A Strep and Staph Aureus.
3 D's of Epiglottitis
Dysphagia, Drooling, and Respiratory Distress.
What position is seen in kids
Tripod position -A characteristic physical stance assumed by patients that helps keep the airway open.
Epiglottitis Clinical Signs & Symptoms
Dysphagia, Drooling, Respiratory Distress, Muffled Voice, Tripod Position, Toxic looking in appearance, Fever, and Sore throat.
What is seen on an xray
Thumb print sign- A diagnostic sign seen on a lateral neck X-ray showing a swollen epiglottis.

Epiglottitis Examination Golden Rule
Never examine a child with epiglottitis initially, because examination can lead to death; always manage first and leave the child alone initially.
Epiglottitis Airway Management
Intubate or perform a tracheostomy if necessary (if closure of airway occurs).

Complications of Epiglottitis
Epiglottis Abscess and Hypoxic Brain Injury (if airway closure is prolonged).
