what types of experiments are there
lab, field, quazi, natural
what is a lab experiment
most variables are controlled and standard procedures/ not necessarily in a lab
what are the advantages of lab experiments
control of EV's = high internal validity and more valid results overall
Replication = other researchers can repeat so findings should be highly reliable
State relationship between IV and DV and cause and effect can be stated easier
what are the disadvantages of lab experimetns
Experimenter bias can be fixed with double blind
Low external validity (will act differently in lab)
Demand characteristics -> participants trying to figure out what does the researcher wants
what is a field experiment
conducted in a natural settting e.g. school and the iv is manipulated by the researcher
what are the advantages of field experiments
Higher ecological validity, findings are more generalisable to real life, situation is similar to real life
what are the disadvantages of field experiments
Low control of extraneous variables (noise, movement) -> change is due to extraneous variable
what is a natural experiment
change in iv occurs naturally
what are the advantages of a natural experiment
Very high external validity because things happened without manipulation
No demand characteristic because real life happens
what are the disadvantages of a natural experiment
No control over Ev's
Not replicable
what is a quasi experiment
the difference within the group e.g. age is the iv
what are the advantages of a quasi experiment
Only way to study gender differences
what are the disadvantages of a quasi experiment
Can't control participant variables
