Democritus
Coined "atomos", believing matter is made of indivisible particles.
John Dalton
Proposed the Billiard Ball Model (atoms are blank, spherical balls).
J.J. Thomson
Used the Cathode Ray Tube experiment to discover electrons (negative charge). He created the Plum Pudding Model (negative electrons scattered in a positive sphere).
Robert Millikan
Conducted the Oil Drop Experiment to find the exact charge of an electron (\(1.6 \times 10^{-19}\) Coulombs) and calculate its tiny mass.
Ernest Rutherford (1911):
Fired alpha particles in the Gold Foil Experiment. He discovered the nucleus—a dense, positively charged center where most mass sits, surrounded by orbiting electrons.
James Chadwick
: Discovered the neutron because subatomic masses and charges did not add up.
