What are particulates?
Tiny solid particles or liquid droplets suspended in air.
What is soot?
Fine particles consisting mainly of carbon from incomplete combustion.
How are carbon particulates formed?
When hydrocarbons undergo incomplete combustion.
Why are particulates harmful to human health?
They can enter the lungs and contribute to respiratory and cardiovascular problems.
Why can very small particulates be particularly harmful?
They can penetrate deep into the respiratory system.
What environmental effect can soot have?
It can darken surfaces and reduce the reflection of sunlight.
How can soot deposited on snow or ice affect melting?
It reduces reflectivity, increasing solar energy absorption.
What is albedo?
The proportion of incoming sunlight reflected by a surface.
Why does a lower albedo increase warming?
More solar radiation is absorbed rather than reflected.
What are common sources of particulate pollution?
Diesel engines, industrial combustion, fires and other processes.
How can particulate emissions from vehicles be reduced?
By using particulate filters.
How can particulate emissions from factories be reduced?
Using filters and other particle-removal equipment.
Why are particulates different from gases?
Particulates are small solid particles or liquid droplets, rather than individual gas molecules.
