Vocabulary flashcards covering the flow of potential and kinetic energy in mechanical and thermal systems, including bicycle movement and heating soup on a stove plate.
Bicycle energy system
A system where potential energy stored in a person is converted into mechanical motion as their legs turn the pedals, driving the chain and gears to propel the bicycle forward as kinetic energy.
Thermal systems
Systems that involve the transfer of heat energy, such as a cup of tea releasing its heat to the surrounding environment.
Input energy (stove system)
Electrical potential energy from the stove plate that transforms into heat energy once the plate is switched on.
Heat transfer (pot of soup system)
The conduction of heat energy from the heated stove plate directly into the base of the stainless-steel pot, which is then transferred into the soup.
Kinetic energy (thermal system)
The energy of motion observed as heat moves through the soup, causing its temperature to rise, bubbling to occur, and warm water vapor to ascend.
