What is "Multicultural UK"?

A way of describing the UK that shows that people within the region tolerate different cultures living alongside them. e.g. A number of ethnic minorities live amongst white christian minority

Values

social rules or expectations that govern behaviour.

Norms

strong principles or beliefs that something is worthwhile.

Cultural Diversity

the existence of a variety of cultural groups within a society.

Culture

The whole way of life for a society including their norms and values e.g. fashions, traditions, music, language

Subculture

Minority group of people who share norms & values that set them apart from others

What might people within a subculture share?

Age, religion, political beliefs, ethnicity etc

Cultural Hybridity

when two cultures mix e.g. Britain has hybridity because it has influence of all British countries as well as ethnic groups and global culture

High Culture

cultural patterns that distinguish a society's elite e.g. ballet, opera

Popular Culture

cultural patterns that are widespread among a society's population

Global Culture

behavioural standards, symbols, values, and material objects that have become common across the globe

Consumer Culture

a culture in which personal worth and identity reside not in the people themselves but in the products with which they surround themselves

Bourdieu 1984 on Pop Culture

argues that the distinction between high and popular culture lies in the power of those who support and access them

The Hamar Tribe - culture study

a tribe from Ethiopia who have a culture rich in ceremony. males leap and run across cattle backs to be welcomed into adulthood and females are whipped to show their devotion to men

The UK and cultural hybridity

contains scottish, welsh, british, irish but also US and Asian culture, influences from 1st and 2nd gen immigrants who adapt hybrid identities e.g. braisian or south Asian culture mixed with British values like henna
