Electrostatic Series
A list generated to determine the charge produced on each object when contact occurs through friction, organized by an object's tendency to hold or gain electrons.
Weak Hold on Electrons
A property of materials located near the top of the electrostatic series that makes them lose electrons easily and become positively charged when rubbed.
Strong Hold on Electrons
A property of materials located near the bottom of the electrostatic series that gives them a high tendency to gain electrons and become negatively charged when rubbed.
Positively Charged Object
An object that loses electrons during friction because its nucleus has a weaker attraction to electrons than the object it was rubbed against.
Negatively Charged Object
An object that gains electrons during friction because its nucleus has a stronger attraction to electrons than the object it was rubbed against.
Objects in the Same Electrostatic Group
Materials that share the same row in the electrostatic series (such as Carbon, copper, and nickel) and result in neutral charges when rubbed together because neither has a stronger hold on electrons.
