Vocabulary flashcards covering the components and anatomy of the Vacutainer system for venous blood collection.

The Vacutainer system for venous blood collection
An assembly used to draw venous blood specimens, consisting of a sterile blood collection needle, needle holder/adapter, and a pre-evacuated vacuum/glass specimen tube.
Bevel
The slanted opening at the tip of the sterile blood collection needle designed for vein entry.
Sterile blood collection needle
The double-ended needle in the Vacutainer system used to penetrate the vein and deliver blood into the specimen tube.
Sheath over end of needle
The protective rubber sleeve covering the tube-puncturing end of the needle inside the holder/adapter.
Needle holder/Adapter
The rigid plastic barrel that threads onto the needle and guides the evacuated tube into position.
Flange
The flared plastic extensions at the open base of the needle holder/adapter providing leverage during tube insertion and removal.
Color coded rubber stoppered cap
The rubber closure that maintains the tube's internal vacuum and provides visual identification of the tube type and additive.
Pre-evacuated vacuum/glass specimen tube
The collection tube manufactured with a calibrated internal vacuum to draw a specific volume of venous blood.
