Aspergillus flavus
Macroscopic:
front: yellow-green with white border, velvetly to wooly
reverse: cream to tan to yellowish
Microscopic:
phialide rise circumferentially from the vesicle (radiate conidia orientation) - mostly biseriate

Aspergillus fumigatus
Macroscopic:
front: bluish green with white border, velvetly to wooly
reverse: white to tan
Microscopic:
phialide and conidia extend from the top half (or 2/3) of the vesicle (columnar conidia orientation) - uniseriate

Aspergillus niger
Macroscopic:
front: jet black with white border, velvetly to wooly
reverse: white to tan to pale yellowish
Microscopic:
phialides arise circumferentially and black conidia can observe the vesicle (radiate conidia orientation) - biseriate

Fusarium sp.
Macroscopic:
front: cottony, white to pink, purple or brown
reverse: varies
Microscopic:
phialides support macroconidia (3-6 cells) which are sickle-cell shaped, with a distinctive foot cell; microconidia occurs in balls

Paecilomyces sp.
Macroscopic:
front: powdery to cottony, tan to yellowish brown
reverse: may appear darker
Microscopic:
long, narrow-pecked, penicillus-type phialides (swollen at their base) bear chains of oval or spindle-shaped phialoconidia

Penicillium sp.
Macroscopic:
front: velvetly to powdery, blue green with white border
reverse: pale cream
Microscopic:
Flask-shaped phialides (produced singly, in groups or from branched metulae - brush-like apperance) support chains of round phialoconidia
oval or cylindrical yeast cells; budding or planate division

Sarocladium sp. (formerly Acremonium)
Macroscopic:
front: dry, felt-like (waxy), off-white
reverse: yellowish
Microscopic:
tapering, slender conidiophores (or phialides) that form at an upright angle from the hyphae
one or 2-celled, elliptical phialoconidia that are held together by a mucoid substance (“slimy-balls"“) at the tip of the phialides

Scopulariopsis sp.
Macroscopic:
front: velvetly to powdery, off-white
reverse: honey golden brown
Microscopic:
penicillus-shaped annellophores support annelides
annelides support large-lemon shaped anneloconidia (may be echiulate or spiny with age)
