Neuron
cells that transmit info from sensory cells to muscles or among neurons
Glial ( neuroglial) cells
neural support tissue that provides electrical insulation and transmits nutrients to neurons
more numerous than regular neurons
Dendridtes
receives info (impulses) from other neurons or sensory receptors. single neuron may have many dendritic projections
Axons
send info to other neurons or to muscles. neuron only has one axon.
can be long and travel through spinal column
Afferent
receiving
can be thought of as sensory
Efferent
sending
can be thought of as motor
Myelin
fatty, insulating cover on neural projections, formed by oligodendrocytes or Schwann cells two types of glial cells
myoneural junctions
number of fibers innervated varies from a few to several hundred
-muscles with higher innervation is founf where fine motor control is needed
motor unit
smallest physiological component of movement consisting of neuron and the muscle fibers it innervates
Epithelium
tightly packed sheets of cells with little intercellular material.
protective, secretory, absorptive and sensory functions
typically lines passageways and surfaces
(around)Epithelium Proper
external layer of skin (epidermis) and those membranes which are continuous with the epidermis
(ec membrane lining of digestive tract)
Endothelial tissue
no community with epidermis
-inner linings of walls of blood and lymph vessels
-composed ov flat celss that form a smooth surface
Mesothelial tissue
specialized form of epithelium that lines internal cavaties
-composed of a layer of loose connective (areolar) tissue covered by a single layer of flat cells form smooth slippery surface
