Transactional Send journeys

Triggered via real-time API calls (REST API) from an external system at the exact moment an event happens, it instantly send personalized messages.

They do not watch SFTP folders or process batch files.

Create Journey Single Send

‘Journey Builder’ tab → drop down menu appears, click ‘Journey Builder’ → in ‘Journey Dashboard’, go to the right and click ‘Create New Journey‘ button →

in ‘What do you want to build? section, select 1 of 3: 1. ‘Multi-Step Journey’, 2. ‘Single Send Journey’ or 3. ‘Transactional Send Journey’ →

select ‘Single Send Journey’, under it select 1 of 3: 1. ‘Email’, 2. ‘SMS’ or 3. ‘Push’ → select ‘Email’. → click ‘Create’ button

No Flow Control for Single Send however can use Einstein Engagement Frequency and Einstein Sent Time Optimization.

in ‘Send a Single Send’ screen on the left narrow panel, you scroll down to ‘Can Einstein Help? (Optional)’ click ‘Explore’ button →

→ You can add Einstein Engagement Frequency and Einstein Sent Time Optimization → click ‘Add’ button and it will appear on the canvas.

→ Go to the top and click on default “new journey - Month day year at 00:00AM/PM” and type new name →


on the right canvas you have ‘Data Extension’ button →> ‘Einstein Engagement Frequency’/’Einstein Sent Time Optimization’ button →> ‘Email’ button →> ‘Schedule’ button. → click on the ‘Data Extension’ button →

on the left narrow side you only have data extension as an option, click ‘Select Data Extension’ button →

in ‘Data Extension’ section, select the ‘Data Extension’ folder → this will open to show more folders → locate and select your data extension →

While still in ‘Data Extension’ section, on the left, click on ‘Filter Contacts’, this will open the ‘Filter Contacts’ screen → under ‘Attributes’, go to box with ‘Contact Data’ inside, click on ‘Contact Data’ → select the field/attribute that is in the data extension → it will appear on the right canvas →

on the right canvas bottom, click ‘Summary‘ button →

in ‘Data Extension Summary’ window, review the text and click ‘Done’ button. →


Your option between ‘Data Extension’ button →> ‘Email’ button is Einstein Engagement Frequency and Einstein Sent Time Optimization always place these Einstein before ‘Email’ button.

→ to configure Einstein Sent Time Optimization just click the button on canvas, → on the left side narrow panel, ‘Einstein Single Send - 24 Hours’ section appears, → select your deployment time of 4 hours, 12 hours, 24 hours, 48 hours, 72 hours; 7 days or Custom. → click ‘Custom’ button and click on the ‘+’ plus button 2x to get 2 hours. → click ‘Done’ button.


on the right canvas click on the ‘Email’ button → on the left, ‘Activity Summary’ screen appears, → under ‘Message Definition’, select 1 of 2 1. ‘Select Message’ or 2. ‘New Message’ , click on ‘Select Message’ button. →

in ‘Select a Message‘ screen and inside ‘Message Definition’ side tab, you are in ‘Content Builder Messages’ with ‘Local’ or ‘Shared’ directory →

the default directory is ‘Local’ folder, under this is default ‘Content Builder’ folder → click on ‘Content Builder’ folder to open and see other folders → select the email message, all message should have ‘Approved’ status → click ‘Summary’ button at the bottom.


in ‘Activity Summary’ screen, review your message definition. It will show ‘Message Configuration’, ‘Delivery Options’ and ‘Advanced Options’.

‘Message Configuration’ you can edit ‘From option’: ‘Send Classification’, ‘Sender Profile’, ‘Delivery Profile’, ‘Subject line’, ‘Preheader’. If your email message has status of ‘Approved’ subject line and preheader cannot be changed. If your email does not have status ‘Approved’ then you can change the subject and preheader only Locally in journey builder however in Content Builder the subject line and preheader will be the older version.


‘Delivery Options’ you can edit ‘Publication List’, ‘Suppression List’, ‘Domain Exclusion’, ‘Exclusion Script’, Tracking for Track Clicks, Tracking for Suppress for Send Report, Tracking for Retain Sent Log Data, Tracking for Send Tracking for Sales Cloud and ‘Campaign Association’.


‘Advanced Options’ you can edit send settings:

Message Priority: Low, Medium or High;

Add a Keyword,

Multipart MIME,

Disable API calls after error threshold reached.

→ once done with ‘Message Configuration’, ‘Delivery Options’ and ‘Advanced Options’ click ‘Done’ button →


on the right canvas you click on ‘Schedule’ button → on left side, ‘Schedule’ screen appears, ‘Set the schedule for when contacts enter the journey’ has 1 of 2 options: 1. ‘On Activation’ or 2. ‘At Specific Time or Date’.


‘On Activation’ when you click Save and Send button it will start running.

‘At Specific Time or Date’:

Run Time: you choose your date.

Time: you select your time

Time Zone: you select your zone.

→ click ‘Done’ button


You go back to the canvas, go to the top right click on the ‘Gear’ icon a drop down menu appears: ‘Journey Settings’ or ‘Copy Journey’. → click ‘Journey Settings’ → in the ‘Settings’ tab,


under ‘Default Email Address’ you can choose:

Use email attribute from Entry Source [Email], email is the default

Use email attribute from Contact


under ‘Google Analytics Tracking’ you can checkbox this:

Track links for message in this journey


Still under ‘Journey Settings’ → click ‘Data’ tab; you can choose

‘Journey Data’ data never change and it if faster - you select the folders

‘Contact Data’ system of record always up to date data but it is slower - you select the folders

→ click ‘Done’ button.


→ click ‘Save’ button, click ‘Validate’ button and click ‘Schedule’ button
