noble gases
Noble gases are a group of chemical elements that are characterized by their lack of reactivity due to having a complete valence electron shell. This group includes helium, neon, argon, krypton, xenon, and radon. located far right on column 18
alkali metals
group one, very reactive, 1 valence electron and tend to lose it when forming ions (f, cl, li)
halogens
next to noble gases (17) they are very reactive non metals and have 7 valence
alkaline earth metals
reactive metals, 2 valence, on the left next to alkali metals (2) (mg, ca, be)
metalloids
located along the zigzag, have the properties of nonmetals and metals often semiconductors (si, b, te)
transition metals
located in the middle (rows 3-12) good conductors of heat and electricity, malleable and strong usually have a shiny colour
non metals
located to the right of the staircase, poor conductors mainly gases, solid non metals are often brittle
what is an ion and why do elements make them?
an ion is an atom that has lost or gained an electron, this happens to create a more stable valence (8)
what is a physical property?
is somthing you can oberve or measure without changing the chemical make up ig. state, malleability
what is a chemical property?
describes how a substance reacts ig. colour change, flammability, solubility.
what is an element
made up of only one kind of atom
what is a compound?
two or more elements chemically bonded, such as water
what is a mixture?
its two or more substances physically combined
what is ionic
its a transfer of electrons between a metal and a nonmetal
what is covalent
a chemical link between two nonmetals (share one or more valence electrons) to achieve a stable valence
what is a pure substance
matter made up of only one kind of particle
what is a heterogenous mixture
a mixture in which different parts are visible
what is a homogeneous mixture
a mixture that looks the same throughout
what is a solution
a homogeneous mixture of a substance in a liquid
what is a suspension
a cloudy liquid mixture in which particles mat be seen
elements in the same row have the same _____
amount of eletron shells
elements in the same column have the same_____
number of valence electrons
