Mixture
Two or more materials mixed together without making a new substance, where each material keeps its own properties.
Separate
To divide materials in a mixture so they are apart again.
Sieve
A tool with holes that lets smaller particles pass through but keeps larger particles back.
Sieving
A method of separating solid mixtures based on differences in particle size.
Handpicking
A simple separation technique used to manually remove unwanted bits or large pieces from a mixture of solids.
Filter Paper
A material with tiny holes (pores) used to separate an insoluble solid from a liquid.
Filtration
A separation method in which a liquid passes through a filter while insoluble solid particles are trapped because they are too large to pass through the tiny spaces.

Residue
The solid material that is trapped and left behind on the filter paper during filtration.
Filtrate
The liquid that passes through the filter paper and is collected in the container below.
Insoluble
Describes a substance or solid that does not dissolve in a particular liquid (such as sand or mud in water).
Dissolve
When a solid spreads completely throughout a liquid, breaks into tiny particles, and forms a solution without being destroyed.
Solute
The substance that dissolves in a solvent, such as salt or sugar.
Solvent
The liquid that does the dissolving, such as water.

Solution
A mixture formed when a solute completely dissolves in a solvent; its dissolved particles are spread throughout the liquid and cannot be separated by ordinary filter paper.
Warming the Water
A method to increase the dissolving speed of a solid because particles in warmer water move faster, helping the solid dissolve more quickly.
Stirring the Mixture
Moving a liquid around a solid to bring fresh water constantly into contact with the solid, helping it dissolve faster.
Using Smaller Pieces
Crushing a solid into smaller pieces to expose more surface area to the liquid, allowing it to dissolve faster.
Evaporate
When a liquid changes into a gas (water vapour) and enters the air.
Evaporation (Separation Method)
The separation process in which a liquid in a solution evaporates into the air, leaving the dissolved solid crystals behind.

Magnet (Separation Method)
A separation technique that uses an object attracting magnetic materials (such as iron filings) to separate them from non-magnetic solids (such as sand).
