Epithelium Classification Rule
Epithelium is classified based on the shape of the cells at the apical surface, not by the shape of the cells at the basement membrane.
Simple Squamous Epithelium
A type of covering and lining epithelium whose main functions are diffusion, filtration, and secretion.
Simple Cuboidal Epithelium
A type of covering and lining epithelium whose main functions are absorption and secretion.
Simple Columnar Epithelium
A type of covering and lining epithelium whose main functions are absorption and secretion, existing in non-ciliated and ciliated varieties.
Simple Columnar Epithelium, Non-Ciliated
One of the two varieties of simple columnar epithelium.
