Total Revenue
The total income generated from the sale of goods or services before any costs are deducted.
Total Cost
The total expense incurred in the production of goods or services, including fixed and variable costs.
Profit Maximizing Level of Output
The quantity of production where total revenue is farthest above total cost, leading to the highest profit.
Marginal Revenue
The additional revenue gained from selling one more unit of a product.
Marginal Cost
The additional cost incurred from producing one more unit of a product.
Monopolist
A market participant that is the sole seller of a product or service, facing no direct competition.
Upward-Sloping Marginal Cost Curve
A graphical representation indicating that as production increases, the cost of producing each additional unit also increases.
Downward-Sloping Marginal Revenue Curve
A graphical representation showing that as more units are sold, the additional revenue gained from selling each unit decreases.
Profit-Maximizing Condition
The point at which marginal revenue equals marginal cost (MR = MC), indicating the optimal level of production for maximizing profit.
Negative Marginal Revenue
A situation where increasing sales results in a decrease in total revenue, often occurring in monopolistic markets.
Price Reduction Effect
The phenomenon where a monopolist must lower the price of all units sold to sell an additional unit, potentially leading to a decrease in total revenue.
Quantity Adjustment
The process by which a monopolist alters production levels to find the most profitable output based on marginal revenue and marginal cost analysis.
