Cell cycle
The series of events a cell goes through as it grows and divides.

Interphase
The stage when the cell grows, performs its normal functions, and copies its DNA.

Mitosis
The division of the nucleus that produces two genetically similar nuclei.

Prophase
Chromosomes condense and become visible; the nuclear envelope breaks down and the spindle begins to form. First stage in mitosis

Metaphase
Chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell. Second stage in mitosis

Metaphase plate
The imaginary line where chromosomes line up in the center of the cell.

Anaphase
Sister chromatids separate and move toward opposite ends of the cell. Third stage in mitosis

Telophase
Chromosomes reach opposite ends and new nuclear envelopes form. Fourth and final stage in mitosis

Cytokinesis
Division of the cytoplasm to form two separate cells.

Cleavage furrow
The indentation that forms as an animal cell pinches into two cells.
