EBS (Elastic Block Store) Volume
A network drive that can be attached to an EC2 instance while it runs to allow data persistence beyond instance termination; bound to a specific Availability Zone and mounted to one instance at a time at the CCP level.
EBS Delete on Termination Attribute
A configurable attribute that determines whether an attached EBS volume is deleted when its EC2 instance terminates; by default, enabled for root EBS volumes and disabled for additional attached EBS volumes.
EBS Snapshot
A point-in-time backup of an EBS volume that can be copied across Availability Zones or Regions to restore volumes.
EBS Snapshot Archive
A storage tier for EBS snapshots that offers up to 75% lower storage costs compared to standard snapshots, with a restoration time between 24 and 72 hours.
Recycle Bin for EBS Snapshots
An AWS feature that allows users to configure rules to retain deleted EBS snapshots for accidental deletion recovery, with customizable retention periods from 1 day to 1 year.
AMI (Amazon Machine Image)
A customized EC2 instance template containing pre-packaged software, operating system, and configurations designed for a specific region to enable faster boot and setup times.
Public AMI
An Amazon Machine Image provided directly by AWS for general public use.
AWS Marketplace AMI
An Amazon Machine Image created, maintained, and potentially sold by third parties on the AWS Marketplace.
EC2 Image Builder
A free AWS service used to automate the creation, maintenance, validation, testing, and multi-region distribution of virtual machine or container images (AMIs) on a scheduled basis.
EC2 Instance Store
High-performance physical disk storage directly attached to the EC2 host server that provides high I/O performance, but is ephemeral and loses all stored data if the instance is stopped or hardware fails.
EFS (Elastic File System)
A managed Network File System (NFS) for Linux EC2 instances that is highly available, scalable, multi-AZ, and can be attached simultaneously to hundreds of EC2 instances.
EFS Infrequent Access (EFS-IA)
A cost-optimized storage class for EFS files not accessed daily, offering up to 92% lower costs than EFS Standard and managed via Lifecycle Policies.
Amazon FSx
A fully managed service on AWS designed to launch and run third-party high-performance file systems.
Amazon FSx for Windows File Server
A fully managed native Windows shared file system built on Windows File Server, supporting SMB protocol, Windows NTFS, and Microsoft Active Directory integration.
Amazon FSx for Lustre
A fully managed, high-performance Linux file system designed for High Performance Computing (HPC) workloads that scales up to hundreds of GB/s, millions of IOPS, and sub-millisecond latencies.
Shared Responsibility Model for EC2 Storage
An AWS security paradigm where AWS manages infrastructure, hardware replacement, and data replication for EBS/EFS, while the customer is responsible for backups, snapshot procedures, data encryption, and managing drive data risks.
