What is simple epithelia and their role
single layer of cells; absorption, secretion and filtration
What is stratified epithelia and its role
Composed of two or more layers; common in high-abrasion areas for protection
What are squamous cells
flat cells
What are cuboidal cells
cube shaped cells
What are columnar cells
Long and skinny cells (look like columns)
Where can simple squamous cells be found
Kidneys, airs sacs of lungs, lining of heart, blood vessels, and lymphatic vessels
What is the role of simple squamous cells
Allows for material to pass by diffusion and filtration; secretes lubricating substances in serosae
Whee are simple cuboidal cells found
Kidney tubules, ducts and secretory portions of small glands, ovary surface
What is the function of simple cuboidal cells
secretion and absorption
What is the function of simple columnar cells
Absorption; secretion of mucus, ezynmes, and other substances; ciliated type propels mucus
Where are simple columnar cells located
Noncilliated type lines the digestive tract, gallbladder, and excretory ducts of some glands.
Cilliated type lines small bronchi, uterine tubes, and some regions of the uterus
Where are pseudostratified columnar epithelia found
Cilliated: lines trachea and upper respiratory tract
Noncilliated: males' sperm carrying ducts and ducts of large glands
What is the endothelium
Simple squamous tissue that lines blood vessels and the heart
What is the mesothelium
simple squamous epithelium that lines the serous membrane, the membranes lining the ventral cavity and covering its organs
Where are stratified squamous epithelia found
Non-keratinized: moist linings of the mouth, esophagus, and vagina
Keratinized: epidermis of the skin
What is the function of stratified squamous epithelia
protection
What is transitional epithelia
Resembles both stratified columnar and cuboidal
What is the function of transitional epithelia
stretches as organ expands; permits stored urine to distend urinary organ
Where is transitional epithelia found
Lines the uterus, bladder, and part of the urethra
