functions of the skeletal system
1.support: frame work for entire body, small tissue held by bone, every muscle is attached to bone
protection: skull protects brain, ribcage lungs, sternum heart
movement cassit: muscle does most work but bones assists
red blood cells production: produced in red blood cells marrow
storage of energy: yellow bone marrow, lipids
mineral homeostasis: calcium, phosphorous, stored in bones
what is bone made of?
matrix- bone tissue
25% of water
25% protein fibers
mineral salts (other 50%)-what makes it hard
other things like magnesium, fluoride, and sulfates
bone formation
Osteorognenitor: makes new cells, unspecialized cell that help makes new bones when it breaks down
osteoblasts: make bone matrix, lose ability to do mitosis, secrete collagen, elastin, and minerals
oestocytes: true bone cell (mature bone cell) comes from oestoblasts when trapped
oestoclasts: breaks it down, typically surface of the bone, breaking down old stuff, resorption
made in matrix
compact bone: makes majority of of skeletal system (the hard stuff)
osteons: also called haversian system
central canal: run length wise (where blood vessels/ nerves are at)
whole bone formation
tramenbransus: formed within other tissues (soft tissue hardens in matrix)
endochondral: cartiledge (best observed in long bones) happens on growth plate
long bone growth
takes place on growth plate=cartilage
aka hyaline cartilage
-zone of resting cartilage: top, condracytes, because they are resting: not in process of long bone
-zone of proliferating cartilage: large carorcells dividing, pushes diaphysis to epiphysis, gets bigger to zone of maturing
zone of maturing cartilage: more levels, cells getting bigger, pushed further further apart
zone of calcified cartilage: secrets mineral salts from blasts
stages in bone healing
hematoma formation: great bleeding, cells rush to cite, inflammed
formation of callus: repairs tissue, formed a few days after, soft callus forms
Bony callus formation: osteoblasts begin to produce new bone and takes 3-4 weeks
Bone remodeling: dead portions are removed by osteoclasts and compact bone replaces spongy bone
