TCP/IP model
A model used to demonstrate how data is transmitted across the internet, consisting of four layers: application, transport, internet, and link.
Application layer
The layer that deals with preparing data for sending and decoding received data so that it can be viewed by the end user, used by applications such as web browsers.
Transport layer
The layer that checks if data needs to be broken down into segments, performs this operation, and adds a header containing protocol information (TCP or UDP) and sender and receiver port numbers.
Internet layer
The layer that deals with the IP protocol to create IP packets from data passed from the transport layer, adding a header with sender and receiver IP addresses.
Link layer
The layer dealing with physical data transmission that creates frames from IP packets, including a header with technology protocol details for the path to the next node and the destination MAC address.
Protocols
Sets of rules for communication over a network.
TCP
A network protocol known as a reliable protocol because it ensures that all packets in a data transmission are received; commonly used for websites, emails, and documents.
UDP
A network protocol known as an unreliable protocol because it doesn't recover any packets that may be lost during data transmission; commonly used for video and voice calls.
