Integumentary system
Organ system made up of skin, hair, nails, and glands that protects the body.
Epidermis
Outer layer of skin consisting of stratified squamous epithelial tissue that continuously replaces itself.
Dermis
Thick layer of skin beneath the epidermis that provides strength and elasticity.
Subcutaneous layer (Superficial fascia)
Layer beneath the dermis that attaches the skin to underlying tissues.
Dermal papillae
Fingerlike extensions that project into the epidermis.
Keratin
Tough waterproofing protein made by epidermal cells.
Stratum corneum
Outer sublayer of the epidermis.
Stratum basale
Deepest sublayer of the epidermis.
Hair shaft
The part of the hair above the skin surface, consisting of dead cells.
Hair root
The part of the hair below the skin surface that, along with associated epithelial and connective tissue coverings, makes up the hair follicle.
Sebaceous glands
Glands that lubricate the hair and skin.
Sweat glands
Glands that help maintain body temperature.
Nails
Accessory structures that protect the ends of the fingers and toes.
Melanin
Substance that helps determine skin color.
