Order of National Artists

The highest national recognition given to Filipino individuals who have made significant contributions to the development of Philippine arts, jointly administered by the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA).

Proclamation No. 1001 of 1972

The presidential proclamation issued by President Ferdinand Marcos Sr. that established the Order of National Artists.

Fernando Amorsolo

Known as the Grand Old Man of Philippine Art, he was the first recipient to be recognized as a Philippine National Artist for Painting in 1972, five days after his death.

Grand Collar

The insignia given to National Artists as a symbolism of their rank and status, featuring an eight-pointed conventionalized sunburst suspended from a sampaguita wreath in green and white enamel.

The motto of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), represented by three Baybayin letters for ka in the center of the National Artist insignia.

Order of National Living Treasures

Also known as Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan (GAMABA), this national award recognizes Filipino citizens engaged in traditional arts uniquely Filipino who have demonstrated high technical and artistic excellence passed on to their community.

Manlilikha ng Bayan

A Filipino indigenous artist who is a recipient of GAMABA, recognized for significant contributions to the promotion and development of Philippine traditional folk arts.

50 Years Requirement for GAMABA

A qualification set by the NCCA requiring a folk art tradition to have been in existence and documented for at least fifty years for an artist to be eligible for the award.
