Stem-and-Leaf Plot

A display that uses columns to summarize data and visualize its distribution by separating each number into a stem and a leaf.

Stem

The column in a stem-and-leaf plot that represents the tens place of two-digit data values, listed vertically from least to greatest (with $0$ written for single-digit numbers).

Leaf

The column in a stem-and-leaf plot that represents the ones place of data values, listed horizontally from least to greatest and separated by commas or spaces.

Key (Stem-and-Leaf Plot)

A required element of a stem-and-leaf plot that shows how to read the data (for example, $8 \mid 7 = 87$).

Line Plot

A way to display data on a number line using an $x$ for each value to show frequency, which can include whole numbers and fractions.

Measures of Center

A value at the center of a data set, which includes the mean, median, and mode.

Mean

Dividing the data to represent a fair share (also known as the average), calculated by adding all pieces of data together and dividing the sum by the total number of pieces.

Median

The piece of data located at the center of an ordered data set arranged from least to greatest.

Median of an Even Data Set

The median calculated when there is an even amount of data by adding the two middle numbers together and dividing their sum by $2$ (finding their mean).

Mode

The piece of data that occurs the most within a data set (there can be more than one mode).

Range

The difference between the greatest and least values in a data set, calculated by subtracting the smallest number from the largest number.
