Vocabulary flashcards covering key concepts and terms related to computer secondary memory storage devices, specifically HDDs and SSDs.
HDD (Hard Disk Drive)
The main storage device of a computer consisting of metallic platters in an air-sealed casing, where data is written using a magnetic head over spinning platters.
Platter
A metallic disk, usually made of aluminum and coated with magnetic oxide, used inside a hard disk drive to store data on its surfaces.
Magnetic Oxide
The substance coated onto the data-storing surfaces of a hard disk platter.
rpm (revolution per minute)
The rate at which a hard disk platter rotates during the data read/write process, typically ranging from 3600 to 15000 rpm.
SSD (Solid State Disk)
A type of mass storage device that maintains stored data in a permanent state without using any internal moving parts.
IDE (Integrated Drive Electronics)
A standard connection interface used by computers to connect internal storage devices like hard drives and SSDs.
SATA (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment)
A standard connection type used to connect internal mass storage devices, such as SSDs, to a computer.
