Define the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics?
Decides the direction of heat flow from objects at different temperatures.
What is the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics in terms of heat transfer?
Heat transfer happens from high to low temperature. Can never happen in reverse naturally.
Example of the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics in Heat Transfer?
E.g warm coffee never gets warmer, heat energy dissipates to the cup and surroundings.
Define Entrophy?
A measure of the amount of disorder a system has, but can also mean the measure of how much energy is not available to do work.
Equation for Entrophy?
S=Q/T
Q- Work Done
T- Temperature
Give an example of Entropy?
Water is more disordered than ice as the molecules are free to move, Ice has a lower entropy than water because ice has a crystal structure which makes it less disordered (entrophy).
What happens to Entrophy in the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics?
Total entropy in a closed system increases or remains constant in any process, never decreases.
Equation for 2nd Law of Thermodynamics for Entropy?
S>0
