Molecule
Just atoms stack together.
Compound
elements that are chemically combined.
Mixture
Physically combined.
BrINClHOF: Diatomic Molecules
Bromine (Br), Iodine (I), Nitrogen (N), Chlorine (Cl), Hydrogen (H), Oxygen (O), Fluorine (F).
Diatomic Molecules
Molecules with 2 of the same atom.
Phase Change
Solid, Sublimation, Deposition, Melting, Freezing, Boiling.
Q=mcΔT
Formula for calculating heat transfer.
Melting Point
Temperature at which a solid becomes a liquid.
Boiling Point
Temperature at which a liquid becomes a gas.
Homogeneous Matter
Can't see parts; easily distributed.
Heterogenous Mixture
See the parts and can remove them.
Pure Substance
Matter in which all samples have identical properties & composition.
Energy Flow
Energy can be absorbed or released during reactions.
Physical Change
Changes in size, shape, or form without creating a new substance. Can be undone
Chemical Change
Particles of one or more substances are rearranged to create a new substance.
Endothermic Reaction
Absorbs heat energy from the environment, causing it to be cold.
Exothermic Reaction
Releases energy/heat, causing the environment to be hot.
Matter
Anything that has mass and takes up space.
Homogeneous
A substance of uniform composition, such as an element or a compound.
Heterogeneous Mixture
A mixture containing two or more types of matter, not of uniform composition.
Solution
A homogeneous mixture, such as salt in water.
Distillation
Separating salt and water.
Element
The same even if combined it would just be diatomic. However, the compound is different elements
Q = mHf (heat of fusion)
THE PLATEAU the formula used to calculate the heat energy required to change a substance from solid to liquid at its melting point.
Q = mHv (heat of vaporization)
THE PLATEAUS, determine the amount of heat needed to boil or condense a solid into a liquid during the phase change at the substance's boiling point.
Carbon & boiling points
The more carbon atoms in a molecule the higher the boiling point
Fractional Distillation
process used to separate a liquid mixture into individual parts, or fractions, based on differences in their boiling points.
