protection from the weather
The building must be "tight to the weather" with vapor barrier membranes.
Roofing underlayment
Underlayment may be traditional 15# or 30# roofing felt or a newer synthetic fabric.
What is the primary purpose of vapor retarder/ housewrap (a.k.a "Tyvek")?
To reduce moist air infiltration and drafts.
Roofing steps 1: Finishing Eaves and Rakes-
When are Eaves and rakes finished? roofing cornice parts.
Before roofing is installed.
Eaves, Rakes, Drip Edge, Fascia, Soffit, Ventilation Strip (Intake Venting), Gutter.
eaves
the overhang at the lower edge of a roof
Rakes
sloping roof edges
Drip Edge
Metal flashing applied to the edges of a roof to prevent water from infiltrating beneath the protective roof membrane and to direct rainwater into the rain gutters.
fascia
Roofing cornice part
Soffit
The underside of a roof overhang.
Ventilation Strip
(Intake Venting) venting around the entire room perimeter
Roofing step 2:
Roof Drainage
Roofing step 3:
Roof Overhangs and Rain Protection
Roof step 4: Ventilated Roofs
Intake vents (at the soffit) work together with outtake vents (at the ridge, such as ridge vents, spinning tops, gable vents, or exhaust fans) to help keep the roof cool and to remove warm moist air.**
Without proper roof ventilation, ventilated roofs collect moisture within the framing, and promote decay and mold growth.
Roofing Step 5
Roof Shingling
Windows and Doors
1) Flashing
2) Installing Windows and Doors
Exterior siding choices used on wood light frame structures.
1) Board Siding
2) Plywood Sidings
3) Shingle Sidings
4) Metal and Plastic Sidings
5) Stucco
6) Masonary Veneer
7) Artificial Stone
8) Fiber-Cement Panel Siding

Exterior Painting, Finish Grading, and Landscaping
Before staining wood a sealer is often applied to allow the stain to be accepted more evenly for a consistent appearance.**
A sealer is to stain as primer is to paint.
Minimum Vent Area of an attic:
The minimum net free ventilating area in a vented attic shall be 1/150th of the area of the vented space.
Ventilation and Insulation Clearance:
Where wave and cornice vents are installed, insulation shall not block the free flow of air. A minimum of a 1-inch space shall be provided between the insulation and the roof shearing and at the location of the vent.
