anatomical position
o Position all movement start from
o Standing in an upright posture, facing straight ahead, with feet parallel and close and palms facing forward
o Preferred over fundamental position for human movement description
fundamental position
o Essentially the same as anatomical position, except that arms are at the sides with palms facing the body
What is the frontal plane of motion?
Passes from one side of the body to the other, creates a front and back side of the body, and rotates around a sagittal horizontal axis.
What is the sagittal plane of motion?
Passes from the front to the back of the body, creates a left and right side of the body, and rotates around a frontal horizontal axis.
What is the transverse plane of motion?
A horizontal plane that passes through the body horizontally, creates a top and bottom segment, and rotates around a vertical (longitudinal) axis.
What is the axis of rotation for abduction and adduction?
Frontal
What is the axis of rotation for flexion and extension?
Sagittal
What is the axis of rotation for internal and external rotation?
Vertical
What are the two types of movements in the sagittal plane?
Flexion and Extension
What axis is associated with flexion and extension movements?
Frontal Axis
What type of movement occurs front to back of the body?
Flexion and Extension
What are the two types of movements in the frontal plane?
Abduction and Adduction
What axis is associated with abduction and adduction movements?
Sagittal Axis
What type of movement occurs toward and away from the midline of the body?
Abduction and Adduction
What type of movement occurs in the transverse plane?
Rotation
What axis is associated with rotation movements?
Vertical Axis
What is the definition of rotation in terms of body movement?
Movement that rotates a segment of the body inward and outward
What is an Open Kinetic Chain?
A movement where the distal segment moves freely and is not fixed against anything.
Give an example of an Open Kinetic Chain exercise.
Bicep curl.
What is a Closed Kinetic Chain?
A movement where the distal segment is closed and the end of the limb is fixed stationary against a surface or object.
Give an example of a Closed Kinetic Chain exercise.
Pushup.
