Interphase
Same as mitosis
Prophase I
Homologous chromosome pairs join together via synapsis, crossing over exchanges random genes on chromosomes, and homologues stay connected via chiasmata
Metaphase I
Paired homologues line up at midline of cell
Anaphase I
Paired homologues pulled apart (chiasmata break), and one member of each pair pulled to opposite pole, but centromeres not split
Telophase I
New nuclei form around chromatids and cytokinesis follows
Prophase II
Spindle fibers attach to both sides of centromere
Metaphase II
Chromatids line up at midpoint of cell
Anaphase II
Centromeres divide, sister chromatids are split and move to opposite polls
Telophase II
New haploid nuclei form followed by cytokinesis
