Advantages of cloud computing

• cost of providing software or maintenance is cheaper than buying licences for multiple users

• ‘unlimited’ storage capacity compared to hard drive which only have certain amount of space

• automatic software updates, saving time manually installing them

• data is backed up automatically at regular intervals so no need for backup procedures

• greater accessibility, able to access data anywhere with an internet connection

• less carbon footprint as less technology is needed, reducing demand for electricity

Disadvantages of cloud computing

• may offer limited bandwidth allowance or additional charges for more

• downtime as relies on internet so if connection fails resources are inaccessible

• data at risk from hackers when using internet

• relies on another company to ensure data security and protection

Impact of cloud computing on gaming

• reduced costs for developers, no need to pay shops

• access larger global customer base, increasing sales and profits

• pay less as purchased online and downloaded immediately

• no need to continually upgrade hardware, able to access powerful game servers through streaming

• support complex visual effects without taking up additional storage

• possible limited broadband capacity, not capable of streaming, must be reliable

• facility to store large data files on powerful high capacity cloud servers

• automatically saving data files after changes are made, reducing chances of losing data

• only have to edit a single copy, no worries about version management

• providers must ensure data files are stored permanently online

Impact of cloud computing on file sharing

• allows collaboration and sharing of files anywhere in world

• upload files to cloud and share e.g google docs

• allows employees work as team on same project online

• changes made will appear in versions used by others immediately through synchronisation, no need to wait
