Flashcards covering basic concepts of radiation, the discovery of x-rays, radiologic technology, and healthcare professions based on the lecture transcript.
What is radiation?
Energy transmitted by waves through space or through a medium (matter).
How is energy defined?
The capacity to operate or work.
What examples of electromagnetic energy are given?
Radio waves, light, and x-rays.
Why should caution be exercised to prevent unnecessary exposure to ionizing radiation such as x-rays?
Because the process of ionization is capable of causing biologic damage.
Who discovered x-rays and on what exact date?
Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen on November 8, 1895.
What award did Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen receive in 1901 for his discovery?
The first Nobel Prize in physics.
What is radiologic technology?
The technical science that deals with the use of x-rays or radioactive substances for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes in medicine.
What is a radiologic technologist?
A general term applied to an individual qualified to use x-rays (radiography) or radioactive substances (nuclear medicine) to produce images of the internal parts of the body for interpretation by a radiologist, as well as to treat disease (radiation therapy).
What is a radiologist?
A physician who interprets images of internal parts of the body produced by radiologic technologists.
What form of energy is used in diagnostic medical sonography?
High-frequency sound waves.
What forms of energy are used in MRI to create images of the internal anatomy?
Magnetic fields and radio waves.
Beyond clinical practice, what additional opportunities exist for R.T.s?
Education, management, and commercial firms.
What environments provide opportunities for individuals employed in healthcare?
Hospitals, clinics, doctors' offices, long-term care facilities, schools, and industry.
