Progressive Era
An era focused on increased voting rights/participation, labor practices, equality (gender, race, & income level), and conservation.
Trust Busting
The Progressive reform used to fix the problem of dominant corporate monopolies.
13th Amendment
Constitutional amendment that abolished slavery.
14th Amendment
Constitutional amendment that granted U.S. citizenship to all.
15th Amendment
Constitutional amendment that granted African American (AA) voting rights.
16th Amendment
Constitutional amendment that authorized the government to levy an income tax.
17th Amendment
Constitutional amendment that established the direct election of senators.
18th Amendment
Constitutional amendment that enacted the prohibition of alcohol.
19th Amendment
Constitutional amendment that granted women voting rights.
W.E.B. DuBois
Founder of the NAACP who fought for racial equality.
Susan B. Anthony
Women's rights leader whose efforts led to the passage of the 19th Amendment.
Jane Addams
Founder of Hull House who fought for the poor and women's rights.
Upton Sinclair
Author who wrote The Jungle and spurred reform for the meatpacking (food) industry.
Ida B. Wells
Journalist who exposed lynching and racial violence/inequality.
Muckrakers
Journalists whose accomplishments led to the Pure Food and Drug Act, child labor laws, new constitutional amendments, and equal rights (rich vs poor).
State Reforms
Electoral mechanisms—specifically initiative, referendum, and recall—that allow citizens a more direct role in government by voting.
Third Party Effects
The electoral impact in which third parties draw votes away from the two major political parties.
Populist Party Goals
A political platform calling for the coinage of silver, a graduated income tax (more $ more taxes), regulation of railroad shipping fees, and the direct election of senators.
Organized Labor (Knights of Labor and AFL)
Labor unions formed during industrialization in response to low wages and low skill requirements that allowed workers to be easily replaced.

Industrialist known for philanthropic causes aimed at advancing society through the establishment of libraries and educational institutions.
