Chromosome
A thread-like structure of DNA located in the nucleus that carries genetic information in the form of genes.
Gene
A distinct segment of DNA that codes for the production of a specific protein.
Allele
An alternative form or variation of a specific gene.
Mutation
A permanent change in a DNA sequence that can alter protein structure and function.
Genotype
The specific combination of alleles that an organism inherits for a trait.
Phenotype
The observable physical traits or characteristics displayed by an organism.
Heterozygous
Having two different alleles for a given gene, such as Aa, Rr, or Qq.
Homozygous
Having two identical alleles for a given gene, such as AA, FF, or bb.
Mechanism by which chromosomes pass from parents to offspring
They are inherited through sexual reproduction via sex cells (sperm and egg).
Outcome when myostatin protein successfully fits into its cell receptor
Normal muscle regulation occurs, leading to typical muscle development.
Outcome when a mutated myostatin protein fails to fit into its cell receptor
The signal to regulate growth is blocked, resulting in extra-large muscle development.
Expected offspring genotypic ratio for a cross between Aa×AA
50% homozygous dominant (AA) and 50% heterozygous (Aa).
