The scientific study of how living things are classified
Carlous Linnaeus (1707-1778)
developed the binomial system of nomenclature a two part naming system for naming organisms.
binomial nomenclature
A system for giving each organism a two-word scientific name that consists of the genus name followed by the species name
dichotomous key
series of descriptions arranged in pairs that can be used to identify an unknown organism
Cladogram
Diagram that shows the evolutionary relationships among a group of organisms
Eubacteria
true bacteria
Archeabacteria
ancient bacteria; live in extreme conditions
Protista
a kingdom of mostly one-celled eukaryotic organisms that are different from plants, animals, bacteria, and fungi
Fungi
Kingdom composed of heterotrophs; many obtain energy and nutrients from dead organic matter
plant
multicellular eukaryote that produces its own food through photosynthesis
Animalia
kingdom of multicellular eukaryotic heterotrophs whose cells do not have cell walls
Domain
A taxonomic category above the kingdom level. The three domains are Archaea, Bacteria, and Eukarya.
Archaea
One of two prokaryotic domains of life, the other being Bacteria.
Bacteria
Domain of unicellular prokaryotes that have cell walls containing peptidoglycan
Eukarya
Domain of all organisms whose cells have nuclei, including protists, plants, fungi, and animals
scientific name
The name given to each species, consisting of its genus and its species label
