Functions of Connective Tissue
Connects tissues to each other
-Muscle to Muscle=Muscle
-Muscle to bone=Tendon
-Bone to bone=Ligament
Support
Transport-blood
Defends
Characteristics of Connective Tissue
Lots of matrix
Fewer cells
Fibers:
-Collagenous(White) - Tough, strong
-Reticular - Delicate
-Elastic - Extensible(cartilage, ear)
4 Types of Connective Tissue
-Fibrous Connective Tissue
-Bone
-Cartilage
-Blood
4 Types of Fibrous Connective Tissue
-Loose C.T(Areolar)
-Adipose Tissue
-Reticular Tissue
-Dense Fibrous Tissue (Regular & Irregular)
Functions of Loose C.T(Areolar) + Location
Function:
-Lines cavities and organs
Location: Deep under the epithelial Dermis, between other tissues and organs
Functions of Adipose Tissue + Location
Functions:
-Protection
-Store food
-Insulation
Location: Fat Cells, bone marrow
Functions of Reticular Tissue + Location
Function:
-Support
Location: Framework of spleen, lymph nodes, bone marrow
Functions of Dense Fibrous Tissue (Irregular and Reg.) + Location
Regular: Stretchy, Hard to heal(avascular)
-Location: Tendons, Ligaments
Irregular: Withstand stress, Hard to heal(Avascular)
-Location: Outer capsule of Kidney & Spleen
Bone Tissue Functions + Location
-Provides support & framework
-Point of Attachment for muscles
-Mineral Reservoir
Location: Compact Bone
What three cells make up Bone Tissue?
-Osteocytes: Mature bone cells
-Osteoblasts: Bone forming cells
-Osteoclasts: Bone destroying cells
(P.S. Osteo means bone, Cyte means cells!)
(Blasts=build)(Clasts=Break)
What is the Haversian System?
The structural unit of bone.
What are the Three Parts of the Haversian System?
Lacunae- Small spaces osteoblasts sit in
Lamelle- Layers of bone matrix
Canaliculi- canals connecting lacunae with blood cells
Function and Characteristics of Cartilage
-Chondrocytes- Only healthy cell in cartilage
-Avascular- No blood vessels
-Perochondrium(C.T. Membrane)- has blood vessels
Function: Heals slower or not at all(low nurtients)
3 Types of Cartilage
Hyaline Cartilage
Fibrocartilage
Elastic Cartilage
Hyaline Cartilage Function + Location
-Most Prevalent
-Found at the ends of bones
Fibrocartilage
-Strongest
-Shock absorbers
Location: Between vertabrae & knee joint
