Anesthesia Machine
Function of an Anesthesia Machine
to deliver gas anesthesia to the animal by means of a circuit of corrugated tubing

Gas cylinders

oxygen flowmeter
function of a flowmeter
Adjusts and regulates oxygen flow rate.

anesthetic vaporizer
function of the anesthetic vaporizer
liquid anesthetic into a gas at controlled levels
what are the two different types of vaporizers
Precision and non- precision

Oxygen flush valve
Function of the oxygen flush valve
allows oxygen to rapidly bypass the vaporizer and enter the breathing circuit containing no anesthetic agents

Fresh gas inlet
function of the fresh gas inlet
A low pressure hose that carries gas and/or gas mixed with anesthetic to the breathing circuit, preventing return of this gas to the previously mentioned components of the machine

Reservoir Bag (Rebreathing Bag)
Functions of the reservoir bag
- Fills as gas enters the breathing circuit and deflates as the patient breathes air in.
- Provides the ability to monitor respiration (depth and rate) and the assess endotracheal tube placement

Inhalation and Exhalation Flutter Valves
Function of the Inhalation and Exhalation Flutter Valves
allow passage of gas in only one direction

Pop-off valve
function of the pop-off valve
acts as a vent to allow excess pressures to leave the breathing circuit
(needs to be closed when manually breathing/bagging a patient or when checking machine for leaks)
****always make sure to REOPEN the pop-off valve if you close it- matter of life or death!

Carbon dioxide absorber
function of the Carbon dioxide absorber
to remove carbon dioxide from the exhaled air and deliver it back to the circuit for re-inhalation by the patient
how often should you change the granules in the Carbon dioxide absorber
every 6-8 hours

Pressure Manometer
Function of the Pressure Manometer
measures pressure within the circuit
what should the pressure not exceed on the manometer
20 cm H2O or mmHg

Scavenging System
Function of the Scavenging System
Removes the anesthetic agent from the waste gas which has left the circuit via the pop-off valve

Rebreathing system
what are the three different sizes of the rebreathing system
pediatric, adult, and large animal
Rebreathing system fuction
Recirculation of exhaled gases to the patient
what are the two different types of re-breathing systems
closed and semi-closed

non-rebreathing system
when is a non-rebreathing system used?
for smaller animals (
non-rebreathing function
- Little or no exhaled gas returned to the patient
- gas flows directly through the fresh gas inlet to the inlet hose for delivery to the patient

Laryngoscope
What are the two different types of Laryngoscope blades?
- Miller blades (straight)
- McIntosh blades (curved)

Anesthetic Mask
Function of Anesthetic Mask
used to administer oxygen and anesthetic gases to nonintubated patients

Anesthetic Chambers
Function of Anesthetic Chambers
Clear, aquarium-like boxes used to induce general anesthesia
What are the two different types of gas cylinders
- E tanks (small), attached directly to anesthetic machine
- H tanks (large), attached remotely to anesthetic machine
function of the Pressure-reducing valve of the compressed gas tank
Reduces outgoing pressure to a usable level

Tank Pressure Gauge
Function of the Tank Pressure Gauge
Indicates the pressure of gas remaining in a compressed gas cylinder
Function of the Line Pressure Gauge
Indicates pressure in the gas line between the pressure-reducing valve and flowmeter
