Base
The number being multiplied.
Exponent (or Power)
How many times the base is multiplied.
Squared
Raised to the power of 2 (e.g. 5^2 = 25)
Cubed
Raised to the power of 3 (e.g. 4^3 = 64)
Rule 1: Multiply with same base
a^m × a^n = a^(m+n). When multiplying with the same base, add the exponents.
Rule 2: Divide with same base
a^m ÷ a^n = a^(m-n). When dividing with the same base, subtract the exponents.
Rule 3: Power of a Power
(a^m)^n = a^(m×n). When raising a power to a power, multiply the exponents.
Rule 4: Any number to the power of 0
a^0 = 1 (if a not equal to 0). Any number to the power of 0 equals 1.
Rule 5: 1 raised to any power
1^n = 1. 1 raised to any power is 1.
